This 3x, 3-hour course will help guide you in understanding key techniques to achieve less waste and better design with your pattern making.
Course overview
Ignite and deepen your understanding of sustainable, zero waste pattern making techniques. An understanding of sewing and minimal pattern making is helpful to explore these techniques fully.
In this course, you will explore the challenges associated with textile waste and explore the zero-waste design method of cutting.
This course will stimulate the mind, challenge creativity and introduce you to innovative pattern making methods.
Workshop 1: Understanding Textile Waste and Zero Waste Design Principles
- Introduction to Sustainable Fashion-exploring the Environmental Impact of Textile Waste
- Introduction to Zero Waste Design Principles - underpinning the key ideas.
- Activity - creating zero a waste skirt pattern
Workshop 2: Practical Application of Zero Waste Techniques-Tops
- Review & discussion of workshop one
- Exploration of the zero waste “slashing the fabric” method
- Activity - Creating Zero Waste Top Patterns -The Box Tee & Oversized Vest or Tunic
Workshop 3: Practical Application of Zero Waste Techniques-Pant
- Review & discussion of workshop two
- Activity - Creating Zero Waste Pant variations-the “spiral” pant with drawstring waist, and culotte style.

Outcome: Participants will leave the workshop equipped with a deeper understanding of textile waste issues, zero waste design principles, and practical skills to apply zero waste techniques in their own pattern making projects.

· Cardboard skirt and pant block, closest to your size (required for class activity)
· Glossary of terms
· Handouts of class exercises
· Pattern making paper for class exercises.
· Long rulers to use during class time.
Finished samples of garments illustrating patterns being made in class.
Great references to illustrate the 2D flat pattern making into the 3D sewing techniques.
